Plot
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is set in 431 BCE, during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, a time of political and cultural upheaval in Ancient Greece. The game follows the journey of a character chosen by the player, either Alexios or Kassandra, a Spartan mercenary and descendant of the legendary Spartan king Leonidas. As a child, the protagonist was cast out from their family due to a tragic incident, forced into exile after a prophecy led to the near death of their sibling. Growing up alone on the island of Kephallonia, they eventually become a mercenary with a mysterious lineage linked to the First Civilization, an ancient race whose advanced technology left behind powerful artifacts.
The main story kicks off when the protagonist is hired to assassinate a political leader but is soon pulled into a larger quest to discover the truth about their family. Throughout the game, the protagonist learns about the Cult of Kosmos, a powerful and sinister organization that manipulates the war and controls major figures across Greece. The cult’s influence extends deep into society, impacting not only politics but also religion and philosophy, with a mission to achieve absolute control over the Greek world. To dismantle the cult, the protagonist must uncover its members, disrupt their plans, and ultimately confront them, working to free Greece from their manipulative grasp.
A key aspect of Odyssey is the protagonist's search for their family members. They encounter their mother, Myrrine, who reveals more about their Spartan heritage and the history of their family, shedding light on the struggles that led to their separation. This journey also introduces them to their estranged sibling, who was taken by the cult and shaped into a tool for its objectives. The siblings’ reunion—whether as allies or enemies—is influenced by choices made throughout the story, reflecting the game's emphasis on player agency and shaping the story's outcome.
The protagonist also encounters historical figures, including Socrates, Pericles, and Hippocrates, engaging in philosophical discussions and assisting with tasks that reveal deeper insights into Greek culture. They also explore mythical locations and face legendary creatures like the Minotaur and Medusa, integrating elements of Greek mythology into the narrative.
In the overarching Assassin’s Creed series, Odyssey connects to the present-day storyline through Layla Hassan, a researcher who uses the protagonist's genetic memories to locate the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, an artifact central to the First Civilization’s technology. Her discoveries in ancient Greece help unravel the ongoing mysteries of the Assassins and the Templar Order, hinting at conflicts yet to come.
Ultimately, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey blends history, myth, and the personal quest for identity and justice, delivering an epic tale of family, power, and choice amidst the chaos of the ancient world.
